Network marketers need an email list from day one, just like any other business. The benefits are huge, and with social media completely and utterly oversaturated, why wouldn’t you want to stand out from the crowd.

What’s an email list?

Have you ever read a blog post on the internet and come across either a pop-up or box that offers you something in return for your name and email address?

That’s an opt-in, where someone offers you something such as a mini e-book, free course, etc, in return for your email address.

Once they have your email address, you are then subscribed to their email list and they can email you content directly to your inbox.   As network marketers, it only makes sense to start up an email list for your business. You are able to follow up with potential leads instead of losing them straight away. 

For example, perhaps someone visited your Facebook page or website, read a post, and gained valuable content, to then click off your page and forget about your site a few minutes later.

If you had an email list set up, you could offer them a freebie in exchange for their email address, and build a relationship with your potential customer. After all, we all know that people need multiple exposures before they will buy from someone.

And as your email list grows, you are sending that one email out to every person who has subscribed, whether it’s 10, 100, or 1000 warm leads who can turn into potential new customers.

 

Why Network Marketers NEED an email list from Day One?

As network marketers, it is always a good idea to start building an email list from the very beginning. And that’s because:

 

Your email list is yours

Did you know that you don’t own your Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media accounts? If these platforms find you violating any of their rules, your account could be disabled. And you would lose all the data on your account because it wasn’t your property. It happens to a lot of people.

You probably already know a friend whose Facebook account was deactivated or she suddenly lost access to her Instagram account. And when that happens, you lose all your followers. The months or even years of slowly building your followers- all gone.

With an email list, you have complete ownership of these emails. It’s yours. Email marketing platforms don’t delete your emails, there’s no risk of you losing your list and hard work.

It’s more personal

If you’ve been in the MLM business for a few months, you might have noticed how many MLMs find it their biggest challenge to connect with their audience. They keep promoting and literally pushing their products, but their viewers scroll down after the first second or so.

Email lists, on the other hand, are more personal. It’s like sending someone a letter. When I get an email from a familiar business, I always end up opening it. They have built that relationship via email, sending an email regularly so I know who they are and what they have to offer before I open up the email.

The best part of sending an email is that you can start each email with the name of your subscriber. It makes an instant connection with them. Imagine getting an email where the sender uses your first name on the subject line. By just using your name, the sender makes sure you are going to open that email and listen to what he wants to say.

 

 

Less Chance of Getting Lost

On Facebook, every time I refresh my feed new posts appear. Facebook has set its algorithm so, that the first priority are posts by your friends or family, then groups, and lastly Facebook pages that you follow.

If you have a page for your network marketing business, you realize that you are at the bottom of the priority feed of Facebook algorithms. This means that there is a very high likelihood that your posts will reach only a few of your followers.

And even amongst these followers, many would just scroll down to the next feed after just a few seconds. I’m not trying to disappoint you, but social media posts are becoming increasingly competitive.

In contrast, email lists have a lower chance of getting lost in all the noise. Your followers are more likely to open your emails than noticing your social media posts.  Also, we don’t check our social media accounts as regularly as we check our emails.

 

 

Your Subscribers are your warm audience

Have a look at your Facebook followers. When you started your MLM business, you probably made a Facebook page and then went on to invite your friends and family. And in your excitement, you also shared your Facebook page in your favorite groups and asked for likes. You probably even did a Like for Like exchange at some point.  

All of us do that. We want to build our credibility on social media. It’s a good thing. But if you are honest with yourself, many of these people aren’t likely to buy from you. They aren’t your ideal target audience, and they probably aren’t interested in the content you are sharing on your page.

With an email list, your subscribers are mostly people who are genuinely interested in your product. They give you their email address because they want to maintain some kind of connection with your business. These people like what you were offering and that’s why they subscribed to your list.

This makes them your warm audience. They might not buy from you after reading your first email. But reading that first email begins the trust journey. With each email, you slowly build trust and connect with your audience. And when they are ready to buy what you have to offer, they will remember you and buy from you.    

 

 

Not everyone has an email list

But everyone has a Facebook page. Facebook is getting increasingly competitive. Do a search on Facebook. Look at the number of network marketers who have a page on Facebook. Almost all of them do. That’s the first thing we do. But not all of them have an email list. Which makes email marketing a less saturated platform. You don’t have to churn out the most beautiful posts and feed to get noticed. 

I’m not saying that you don’t need a Facebook page. You need one to create awareness around you and your MLM brand. But to get ahead of your competitors, you need an edge that they don’t have.

That could be your email list. Because a lot of network marketers still haven’t caught on to the importance of having an email list. And before they do, you can start building yours ahead of the competition.

 

 

Look at the Stats

If you still aren’t convinced, you only have to look at the statistics. According to the Ultimate List of Email Marketing Stats for 2020, 59% of marketers claim that email is their biggest source of investment returns. For every dollar they spend on email marketing, they make sales of $38! More than 80% of business professionals believe that emails have a higher chance of customer retention than other forms of marketing.

How to Start An Email List

A lot of network marketers assume that building an email list takes up a lot of their time, and they have no idea where to start. But believe me, once you start, you will realize it’s just like writing letters with a little bit of persuasion put in the mix.

Let me give you a step-by-step guide on setting up your email list.

 

 

Start With An Email List Building Platform

There are a lot of options for your email platform. You have Mailchimp, Convertkit, Constant Contact, Mailer Lite, Aweber.

Many of these email list providers are free to use for the first 1000 or so subscribers. It’s a good strategy to start with a free account, and as you start building and growing your audience switch to a paid plan. That’s because a paid plan offers you more control over your email.

 

 

Get People to Subscribe To Your Email List

Once you have your email platform, the next step is to encourage your audience to subscribe to your email list. Start by creating opt-in forms on all your social platforms and websites if you have one.

Before you add someone to your email list, you have to get their consent. Otherwise, the email is considered SPAM and you will be violating the rules of the CAN-SPAM act. You don’t want that.

When you ask people for their emails, be clear on what you will be using their email addresses for. Consider creating a double opt-in form to avoid your email getting lost in the Spam or junk folder.

 

 

Make It Tempting

Why would someone want to receive an email from you? What are you offering to your followers to make their lives better?

Tempt them with a freebie or an offer to get them to give you their permission to send you emails. Relate that freebie to your industry. For instance, if you are marketing weight loss pills, offer them a Detox Diet Plan. Or create an ebook on ‘Healthy Recipes to Trim Inches off Your Waistline.

Creating a freebie that connects with your industry will help you get closer to your warm audience. These are the people that are more likely to be interested in your product. And because they are interested in it, they are more likely to be tempted to subscribe.

 

 

Review Your Competition

Research the top network marketers in your niche. Subscribe to their email list. Look at how they are connecting with the audience.

Take notes from their emails. Use them as inspiration in your own emails. It is a good idea to subscribe to a few competitors and the MLM gurus.

 

 

Start Creating Your Emails

Now that everyone is sorted out, create and send your first email. Remember to address your subscribers by their first name and add an interesting subject line to encourage them to want to open your email.

Make your emails interesting with graphics and funny GIFs. 

In your emails, send them cool offers or let them know what’s new in your MLM business.

Write a personal story to add to the personal touch. 

 

 

Analyze your Emails

Once you have sent your first few emails, analyze them. Every email marketing platform has an analytics section where you can check how your subscribers are reacting to your emails.

You can check how many people opened your emails. If more than 30% of your email subscribers are opening your emails, then it’s a good rate.

You should check if your emails are bringing you any sales. If they aren’t you need to revise your strategy. Also, look for click-through rates. This is how many people are clicking on the links of your emails. Are they checking out the new product on your website that you linked in your email? 

Another good idea is to analyze your email through A/B testing. With A/B testing, you can create two sets of emails for two sets of subscribers. This allows you to check which types of emails perform better with your audience. Copy the strategy of the emails that perform well.

Building an email list isn’t rocket science, and it can be very profitable. If you aren’t building an email list for your audience, you are missing out on a gem method to growing your business and keeping in touch with warm leads. 

To sum up, an email list is more personal and statistically,  it has a higher rate of conversion compared to other digital marketing avenues. Network marketers need an email list also because it creates a closer connection between them and their audience.
