Working from home is not a new concept, but it is an opportunity that is becoming accessible to more and more individuals, particularly parents wanting to spend more quality time with their family.

Even in the corporate world, we have seen a big boom in telecommuting jobs. Our global village is opening up to the possibility of allowing their workers to work from home or offer the chance of flexible hours.

What is Working from Home?

Working from home is basically enjoying the opportunity to do your job from home. Your home is your office. In some jobs, particularly if you are still employed by a company, you might be expected to visit the office for meetings or ‘check-ins’, but the bulk of your job is managed from home.

Many employees are opting to work from home for its many benefits:

Flexible Hours

When you work from home, you are the one who decides when to work, what hours to work and when to take your breaks or days off.

You can be there for your kids. The opportunity of flexible hours is suitable for moms who find it almost impossible to manage a 9 to 5. Not forgetting the insanely high nursery fees. Working from home means mums are no longer earning a full-time wage, only for the majority of their income to go towards childcare costs.

Zero commuting hours

The average person spends 4 hours every week commuting from office to work (and back). When you work from home, you save not just time, but also you enjoy a stress-free-not-stuck-in-traffic day.

Work-Life Balance

Work from home is perfect for people who have a family to take care of but would like to be able to manage both with ease. With many employees, work tends to overshadow all aspects of life.

With working from home, you can manage the hours you work around our family. Plus, zero commuting hours means you can give more time to both your work and your life.

Work From Anywhere in the World

If you want to move to Bali tomorrow, you can! You can work from anywhere. Be it a coffee shop near your home, or a beach in Thailand.

Work From Home Opportunities

If you are planning to work from home, there are two ways you can approach it. Either work for a company or become a freelancer. There are multiple benefits for both options, so it is deciding which benefits are a priority to you. For example, are you still looking for a regular paycheck with set responsibilities and a boss? Or, would you like to work completely for yourself, choosing your projects and who you work with?

Working For A Company

Many companies are now offering their employees the opportunity to work from home. There are online companies who have also launched websites which you can sign up to and start applying for positions.

The benefit of working for a company is that they have already done the work of establishing and promoting the platform. Your job is to do just the work and earn. You don’t have to spend hours fishing for clients and doing rounds of calls to get people to hire you.

However, most of the companies take a percentage off from your earnings. It’s usually between 10-15% of your total earnings. Or fixed monthly fees.

If you are looking to work for a company, there are quite a few options you can explore.

Teach Online

Do you have good authority in your field and would enjoy imparting your knowledge to others? Consider teaching online.

The structure of learning is also evolving with the expanding reach of the internet. Many are now signing up to online courses, rather than a college education.

If you are an expert in your field, you can easily create your own course to sell and help others. Platforms such as Udemy and Skillshare are popular to use and offer a huge range of courses for people to purchase. They do take a commission of your sales, but, with already being an established platform can help your course reach 100s of potential customers.

Alternatively, a huge online industry is teaching ESL online, aka teaching English as a second language. Within this industry, you can make from $9-30 an hour depending upon your experience, qualifications, where you’re from and the company you work with.

Here is a list of some companies to get you started:

Network Marketing

You probably already know someone who is in network marketing. Network marketing is expanding its horizons. New companies are offering network marketing opportunities in new industries.

Network marketing is basically selling products or services for a company, and earning commissions from those sales. You also earn money when you add more people into the company’s team. Good network marketing companies offer all the training to their new reps, so almost anyone can join in to earn money.

Some of the top network marketing brands you can explore are:

  • Amway
  • Arbonne
  • Forever Living
  • Usborne
  • Natura
  • Color Street
  • LuLaRoe
  • Nu Skin
  • It Works
  • Do Terra
  • Pampered Chef

Transcribing

This is another possibility to work from home, transcribing audios and videos. To become a transcriptionist, all you need is a good internet connection, a laptop and headphones.

There are quite a few companies hiring transcriptionists, and most of them don’t require any experience or a special degree. However, if you are applying for a medical or legal transcription job, a degree or college education might come in handy.

Before signing up, I would recommend going through a few free transcription courses. Most transcription companies will offer you training in the start when you get accepted.

When applying go through the rules. You might have to pass a test before being accepted.

A few transcription companies you should start with:

  • Accutran Global
  • Daily Transcription
  • Go Transcript
  • Bam
  • Babble Type
  • Birch Creek Communications
  • Allegis Transcription
  • Tiger Fish
  • Transcribe Me
  • Hollywood Transcription

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing works a little like network marketing. You earn money by recommending and selling products to other consumers.

Start affiliate marketing by creating a platform where you can sell the products. This can be a blog or a social media channel. Think of what kinds of products you want to sell. Decide on your niche. Look for programs in your niche and sign up with them.

When thinking of affiliates, the first company that comes to mind is Amazon. Though Amazon is excellent in offering products for every niche, commission rates are extremely low, around 7-10% on average. There are so many other companies which offer a much higher commission rate, cookie length and even repeat commissions.

Here are a couple of suggestions of affiliate products and networks I personally use and love:

  • ShareASale – Affiliate network with access to a vast amount of affiliate programs you can apply for all in one place.
  • Convertkit – Fantastic email marketing service and really easy to navigate with lots of support and training available
  • Tailwind – the ability to save a huge amount of time through scheduling your pins to Pinterest, gaining access to Tailwind Tribes to help you grow your traffic and a lot more analytical data available than using Pinterest alone
  • Ultimate Bundles  – excellent range of product bundles released throughout the year. My personal favourite being the Genius Bloggers Toolkit, which is released annually each October and has seriously increased my knowledge on blogging.

You should also check if the products or services you use (and love) have any kinds of affiliate programs.

For affiliate marketing or just any other kind of marketing, direct selling doesn’t usually work. Your followers don’t like products being pushed in their faces. Create content around the product, and insert the product in strategic positions. Show them how the product solves their problem.

Freelance Websites

And then there are freelance websites. There are quite a few of them on the internet now. These websites connect freelancers with companies and individuals looking to outsource projects. It is a lot cheaper for a company to hire a freelancer for an individual project or monthly work. They don’t have to pay a wage, pension, healthcare benefits, etc.

For freelancers, it’s perfect as you can choose how many projects you want to take on, what hours to work and who to work with.

Work can come in a variety of forms from graphic design, transcribing, to content creation and customer services.

Something to remember is that applying for jobs within these platforms can be highly competitive. Many people are applying for the same positions, so make sure your application stands out. Have a resume already prepared and incorporate relevant samples of your work to showcase your skills and why they should hire you.

Some of the popular freelance websites include:

  • Upwork
  • Freelancer
  • Fiverr
  • FlexJobs
  • PeoplePerHour
  • Craigslist
  • 99Designs
  • Guru
  • TopTal
  • GigBuck
  • WeWorkRemotely
  • Workew
  • Problogger
  • Contena

Become a Freelancer

Now if you don’t want to work for any company, and be your own boss then go freelance. Freelancing means you choose who you want to work with. You can work with multiple companies or individuals at the same time.

Blogging/ Vlogging

Doesn’t it feel that almost everyone has a blog or a YouTube channel these days? That’s because there’s a big potential there.

You create content on something you have a lot of knowledge on or are passionate about. Your content inspires others to follow you. These followers look up to you for suggestions and advice for a lot of things. You influence their decisions. Here’s the potential I’m talking about.

With blogging, there are a lot of ways you can make money:

  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Advertising
  • Sponsored Posts
  • Sell our own products or services
  • Sell membership plans

Virtual Assistant

A virtual assistant is someone who assists businesses and entrepreneurs with different business functions from a remote location. Virtual assistants are growing in numbers each day, and even now the industry is still looking for more.

Companies hire virtual assistants to release their workload. It also decreases their overhead costs, since they aren’t paying a full-time salary when they only need a part-time worker. Plus they save on utility costs and office supplies.

There are many services you can offer as a virtual assistant. Some of these include:

  • Graphic Design
  • Web Design and Development
  • Social Media Management
  • Administrative Services
  • Data Entry
  • Bookkeeping
  • Calendar Management
  • Event Planning
  • SEO and Blog Management
  • Travel Bookings
  • Research
  • Photography
  • Video and Picture Editing
  • Email Marketing
  • Customer Service
  • Transcription
  • Translation

Drop-Shipping

Have you observed how recently online stores have increased exponentially? That’s mostly because of dropshipping.

Here’s what happens in dropshipping. You look for gaps in the market. Something the customer is looking for. This can be from any niche. Now you look for a supplier who can provide that product. Once you find a reliable supplier, you create your website where you sell those products.

Amazon can be categorized as a dropshipping business. But Amazon deals with almost every product category there is. When people like us start a drop shipping business, they focus in on a niche. For instance, pet food or supplies. Or maybe fashion products.

I’m assuming you are now thinking where to get those suppliers from. Start with Ali Express. When searching for suppliers on Ali Express, look at their reviews and rating to avoid frauds.

Some other websites you can also check with:

  • SaleHoo
  • Dropshipper
  • MegaGates
  • Doba
  • China Brands
  • DH Gate
  • Dropship Direct
  • Inventory Source

I would recommend you treat drop shipping like any business. Create a website. You can also create one on Shopify. Once you do, brand your website. Create your name, logo and other design elements. Promote and market your website on social media.

How to Choose the Right Opportunity for You

I’m pretty positive that at this point you might be a little overwhelmed by the number of opportunities available to earn money working from home. There are so many options when you start looking at all the work from home opportunities. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to get to the answer:

  • Why am I considering work from home?
  • What do I want to achieve with a work from home job?
  • What am I good at? Or What do I have experience in?

You should also know that most people who have made it big in work from home jobs didn’t choose the perfect opportunity from the beginning. Most of them tried a few different things before landing on something they truly liked and were good at. Their secret to success was that they keep going, and went up and tried something new when one opportunity failed.

How Can I Work From Home?

Working from home doesn’t require loads of equipment or even information. Most people are able to set up with just a little bit of help. A few things to keep in mind if you wish to start working from home:

Get Your Tech Ready

Most work from home jobs need a laptop and a good internet connection to start with. Once you figure out what work you are going to do, make a list of all the tech you will be needing. Think headphones, printers, phones, etc.

If you are low on money, you might want to invest in just the basics. Expand as you start making a profit.

Business License

Depending on the country you live in, you might need to get a license in your industry. Talk to your local license providers and find out if you need a license to operate.

Talk to the Pros

If you know anyone who is already working from home in the same field as yours, take them out on lunch. Pick their brains.

If you can, talk to a business coach in your relevant industry. They will be able to chart the right direction for you, making your journey smoother. You might even find someone online.

Check Facebook groups where women entrepreneurs hang out. Look for groups with over 1k members. You can always find someone to connect with. One group that I find quite helpful on Facebook is Women helping Women entrepreneurs.

Network and Promote

That’s where you will get the clients from. Now there are two ways to network and promote your business: online and offline.

When it comes to online, there’s a lot of potential in social media. Again, join groups. Look for groups where you are more likely to find your clients. Interact with them and answer people’s questions within groups to show your authority and expertise in your field. Connect with people and provide genuine support and value. People will begin to see you as an expert and this is where you will begin to pick up clients from groups.

To network and promote offline, attend small business events in your area. Schedule appointments with your potential clients directly. Offer your business card or flyer.

There are so many ways you can work from home. It is important to ensure that, when you are considering working from home, to spend time researching and figuring out what career path you want to take first. You need to be realistic about your expectations and find opportunities which are genuine and will cover your outgoings.
