When I started blogging, I had no idea where to even start so I did a lot of research before finally taking the leap.

I started my blogging journey after I had my son. The thought of sharing my personal journey through motherhood and possibly helping other mums along the way made me happy. We all have a story to tell even if they are all unique in their own ways. Even if no one is reading it, just being able to write and get your thoughts down on paper can help you through some of the toughest times.

 

 

You Can Inspire Others

This is probably the most rewarding part about blogging. Just the other day someone wrote on my Instagram post that they were inspired by me getting out there and blogging, and it really made me feel good.

 

There a lot of people that turn to blogs to help them in certain areas of their life. If you create a motivational blog it could help someone stay motivated and take their life to the next level. If you write about motherhood, you might just be helping a mom who was having a hard time. Reading about blogging is what inspired me to take the leap – I spent tons of time researching and I have a lot of ladies who are successful bloggers to thank for me taking the chance and getting started myself.

 

 

You CAN Make Money

To be honest, when I started blogging, I only started it with the intentions of sharing my story and helping other moms, but along the way, I have made money which is amazing. You have probably seen on Pinterest a lot of the pins that say, “I made x amounts of money in my first month of blogging,” and you’re probably thinking that’s not possible. BUT IT IS!

 

There are so many bloggers out there that have quit their jobs outside of the home and started making a full-time income just from their blogs. That is awesome, isn’t it? To make good money it does require WORK, though it is possible.

Choose your niche

Step One: Choose Your Niche

What do you want to talk about? What are you passionate about? Before starting a blog, you need to choose what you want to talk and write about. If you are wanting to monetize your blog and start making money off it from the beginning, it’s best to have a topic to focus on. It makes it much easier to drive the traffic that you want to your blog.

 

When thinking of a niche, you need to think of something that you would like to write about long term. That’s when thinking about what you are interested in and passionate about comes into play. What could you talk about forever? Choosing something that you are not really that interested in can lead to you running out of ideas for your blog, or you are becoming bored and not wanting to write anymore. If you cannot see yourself writing about a specific topic then please choose something else. I have heard from many bloggers that when they first started blogging, they chose something they were not passionate about and ended up quitting.

Step Two: Choose Domain Name & Hosting

When you are blogging as a hobby than using sites like Wix, Blogger, or WordPress.com are totally fine but if you want to turn your blog into a side-hustle than it’s best to invest in getting a self-hosted blog. Honestly, it’s not expensive – it’s totally affordable.

 

Having a self-hosted blog lets you do countless things like run ads, write sponsored posts, make money through affiliate links, and much more. I recommend getting hosting through SiteGround, their hosting is as low as $3.95 a month. Say what? Yep, you read that correctly!

 

Not only are they affordable but their service is fast, and they have a wonderful customer service team. When I had a problem with my blog, there were there immediately to get it fixed. I highly recommend them!

Using Siteground for Hosting

 

This is the page that you will be brought to when clicking the link above. It lists the three WordPress plans that SiteGround offers. I personally recommend the GrowBig plan because it is a great value. It offers multiple websites and the SuperCacher that greatly improves your WordPress and Joomla website speed. But it is perfectly fine to start with the StartUp plan – you will get everything you need to begin with, and you can always upgrade later, if necessary.

You will then be brought to the page where you will choose your domain name. Remember: your domain name is what represents your blog/brand. It is also your site address on the web. When choosing a domain, I recommend not choosing anything long and complicated.

 

You will also want to make sure when choosing the domain name that you go ahead and secure the name on all social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Pinterest, etc.). Even if you are not going to use those platforms I would still go ahead and claim your name just in case in the future you decide to use them.

 

Now you will need to review and complete your order. SiteGround offers you the option of paying for an entire year, two years, or even three years but all at the same low price.

Step Three: Installing WordPress

Now that you have completed your order you can go ahead and login to SiteGround.

 

Once logged in you will be brought to your dashboard, click on my accounts up at the top.

 

There is a dark orange button that says cPanel, go ahead and click it!

 

Now you’re in your cPanel, scroll down until you see WordPress tools – WordPress Installer, you will click that button to start installing WordPress.

 

Bam! You are done setting up WordPress and can log right on into your WordPress dashboard.

Writing Content

What is a blog without content? Your blog is going to be in draft mode until you decide it’s ready to launch. This is the time that you need to take to write some content for your blog. There are many bloggers that say you need to start your blog with more than 10 posts in order to start promoting and getting people to your site. I started my blog with only 5 posts and was receiving traffic from the beginning.

 

It’s your preference on how many blog posts you want to get on your site before you launch. I know a few bloggers who have also hit launch the moment they logged in. Do what you feel is right but make sure you stay consistent with your writing so that you give your readers a reason to keep coming back.

 

 

Installing a Theme

A theme is what your site is going to look like. WordPress offers a ton of themes that are FREE to use which are perfect for when you are starting out. If WordPress themes are not what you are looking for you can check out Creative Market – that have a ton of amazing themes.

 

 

Install Google Analytics and Submit Your Sitemap

So, what is google analytics and why do you need it? Well, google analytics offers you a bunch of information on your site especially your website traffic. This is one thing that is important to keep track of because if you are going to want to make money from your site there are companies that will want to know the amount of traffic you are receiving.

Create Graphics

This is my favourite part! I love creating graphics for my content. So, when you write a new blog post you will want to create a graphic that goes with that post. I’m sure you have seen all the great graphics that are made on Pinterest. Well, that’s where CANVA – my favourite website for making graphics comes into the picture. Creating a graphic that is click-worthy is key on Pinterest.

 

Canva is FREE to use though you can upgrade in order to use their premium features like uploading your logo, uploading your own fonts to use, and creating your brand colours.

 

 

Sharing Your Content

Sharing your content is so important in order to get traffic to your site. If you’re not sharing, then nobody is going to come. So, this is where social media comes into play. My favourite place to share my blog posts is Pinterest though I do share on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Google +, etc. Having all social media accounts is your best bet at getting more traffic to your blog. It also helps with building your presence in the social media world. I do recommend setting up your social media accounts asap, so no one grabs your blog name on any of the platforms.

 

I’m going to let you in on a secret – I don’t spend all day sharing my content. I have a little friend who does it for me – Tailwind. Tailwind is perfect for scheduling your pins for Pinterest and Instagram. It saves so much time, and as a full-time working mum, I need to be able to save time when it comes to my blog. Using tailwind is like having an assistant that works for me, it’s awesome! It has also helped me with driving tons of traffic to my blog.

Starting a blog is simple and affordable. You don’t need any type of tech experience to get started, all you need is determination and you are set. There are many great reasons to start a blog today so if you are a little hesitant remember you wanted to do this for a reason, so just go for it.
